Branding, positioning, and the web.
June 26, 2008
My guest this week is Dr. Alanna Levine. She is a primary care physician and pediatrician who first appeared as a TV Medical Expert on The Fox New Channel. As one of my clients, we worked together to create a functional website, which is featured in this week’s video and can be viewed at www.alannalevinemd.com.
Since developing her website she has broadened her TV appearances to now include INSIDE EDITION and ABC NEWS NOW. She will also be featured as a guest medical expert on an upcoming web-based parenting video series. Her new website has played an important part in broadening her exposure in media.
Dr. Alanna Levine’s website includes, her bio, TV Reel, list of appearances, photos and contact info. I think it’s a great example of a clear, clean and concise website that can be created inexpensively by using Apple’s iWeb application.
Most importantly, her website is used when contacting producers or bookers with potential story ideas. Instead of sending a press kit and reel by mail, producers and talent bookers are directed to her website, thereby eliminating unnecessary shipping expenses and time delays. Having a functional website also helps establish credibility. By listing her bio, producers have all the information they need on her background along with an updated reel she edits herself as new appearances become available. To edit her TV reel, Dr. Alanna Levine uses iMovie , which is pre-loaded on the latest MAC computers.
To find out more about iWeb and iMovie, click to http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Tutorials are available to teach you how to safe costs by creating your own website and TV reel.
Dr. Levine also has a press kit she created herself, which will be featured in an upcoming video as well.
I hope watching Dr. Alanna Levine’s video this week and visiting her own website inspires you in some way.

Welcome!
June 17, 2008
Welcome and thanks for joining THE TV STAR MAKER, the video series that teaches you how to use TV and the media to build your brand and your business.
This video series was inspired, in part, by my book, STARRING YOU! which was published by Harper Collins, July 2007. THE TV STAR MAKER is not just a video show, but also a unique and complete learning experience for executives, entrepreneurs and experts who want to learn how to utilize TV as a powerful tool to grow business.
As a talent and development executive for many years at E! Entertainment Television, The Style Network and Sony Pictures Television, I have a number of tried and true ideas to share with you about how to successfully build your brand by positioning yourself as an expert on TV. In addition to my ideas and suggestions, I will also be introducing you to a number of top-notch guests, who will share their personal stories about how they got started and developed their TV presence. Besides meeting experts and guests who have appeared in front of the cameras, you’ll also meet VIP guests from behind the scenes who will teach you what works and what doesn’t in their respective areas of expertise. You’ll hear from producers, agents, managers and entertainment attorneys who will tell you the real truth.
Here is a sampling of some of the topics we will be exploring along the way:
- What’s YOUR benefit and why this is the most important step in the process of building a TV presence?
- The “art” of positioning.
- The importance of establishing and growing your credibility.
- How TV cameras can spot a “fake” a mile away.
- The importance of watching TV shows to stay “in the know”.
- The importance of developing a realistic and functional press kit and website for your brand.
- How to develop a “solid” TV pitch.
- How to create a “watchable” TV reel.
- How best to present your pitch.
- The importance of flexibility.
- How to be a great guest from the get-go.
- Why commandment number one is: respecting producers and their time at all times.
- How to dress for success.
- TV Makeup Do’s and Don’ts.
- How to Network Naturally.
- Developing A Multi-Platform Brand Over Time.
- And of course, the Importance of Persistence.
You’ll learn on THE TV STAR MAKER that there just isn’t one way to get on TV. Everyone has their own unique abilities, talents and stories about what works and what doesn’t. This is why my guests will play such an important role in this overall learning process. By hearing their stories, you learn how to design an approach that works best for YOU!
Last but not least, my best personal and professional advice is “never beg for love…for money… or to be guest on TV.” Communicating with grace and style to everyone in this industry at all times will always be an underlying truth behind this series.
I hope THE TV STARMAKER will inspire you in many ways. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
