Creating a producer-friendly press kit.

July 14, 2008

Dr. Alanna Levine is back this week with basic how-to advice on creating a producer-friendly press kit.

The basic elements of a her press kit include:

  1. Current Bio

  2. Current Photo

  3. TV Reel

  4. Business Cards

If press articles are available, include these for additional credibility. Most press kits come in a wide range of 9 x 12 folders, some store bought and others professionally printed and customized. Dr. Alanna Levine uses a clear plastic DVD case. I like the idea of using this type of case because it is compact and will stand out in a pile of press kit folders on a producer’s desk. Adding a great photo with your name, contact info and signature statement on the cover also makes it crystal clear who you are and what benefit you are offering.

Every press kit needs at least one professional photo. Ask your friends and contacts for a great photographer referral in your area or try searching for one on-line. Be sure to ask to see examples of the photographer’s work in advance. The same photo you use in your press kit can also be used on your bio and website.

When creating your own press kit, keep in mind that producers are busy and make decisions quickly, so it’s extremely important that every item in your press kit is labeled with your contact info. As a producer for many years, I was often frustrated to find good candidates and have to struggle to find a phone number or email buried in the kit. More than one potential guest lost an opportunity because time was short.

If a publicist, agent or manager represents you, they often prefer to list their own names and numbers as the primary contact. In these instances, I would recommend adding your business card to the press kit as well. Provide producers with your personal cell phone number so they can reach you anytime, anywhere. If you goal is to get booked on TV, accessibility is the name of the game!

If you can afford to have your press kit created by a professional, that’s fabulous. If you can’t, I hope this week’s video has inspired you in some way to create your own in a simple and affordable way.

Grassroots Marketing

July 6, 2008

Singer/Songwriter and Music Educator, Audra Rox, is our special guest this week. You can find out more about Audra Rox, her music classes and performances at www.audrarox.com.

Audra has been teaching music and performing for New York families for the past eight years. Her band is made up of professional musicians, mostly moms and dads, , who perform original songs on topics such as lost shoes, broken toys and sugar highs.

By handing out flyers and passing out one thousand CD’s, Audra has attracted a devoted following of kids and families.  Soon after, she was performing at “live” events and featured in the NEW YORK POST and TIME OUT NEW YORK.

Ultimately, she caught the attention of producers at NICKELODEON and SESAME STREET who hired her to appear in music videos on their shows.
We caught up with Audra Rox in Brooklyn as she was taping a music video for Lauren Bank Deen, multiple Emmy Award and James Beard Award-winning lifestyle television producer and author of KITCHEN PLAY DATES. www.kitchenplaydates.com.

With the launch of her TV career, Audra hired a publicist, booking agent and entertainment attorney to help her grow her business. Besides building her music education business, Audra’s TV appearances helped her get booked in performance shows across the country, thereby expanding her reach from local to national.  That’s the power of television.

“People in the TV industry are always looking for talented people,” says Audra.

And that’s a fact! There are hundreds of shows that depend on guests. Producers are always on the look out for new ideas and fresh faces to make their TV shows and segments come to life. By listening to the stories of upcoming guests, you to can learn how to build your own brand and business on TV.

Upcoming guests have appeared on OPRAH, DR. PHIL, THE MARTHA STEWART SHOW, THE RACHAEL RAY SHOW and more including:
